What is a Secure Web Gateway?

Secure Web Gateway is a security control that sits between users and the internet, intercepting all outbound web traffic and applying policy before connections reach their destination. Operating as a full forward proxy, it applies URL filtering, decrypts and inspects TLS/SSL sessions, detects malware, controls application usage, and enforces DLP — providing visibility and control that network-layer firewalls cannot deliver.

How does an SWG work? An SWG operates as a full forward proxy — intercepting every outbound web request and evaluating the destination against URL categories, reputation scores, and policy rules before allowing or blocking the connection. For HTTPS traffic, the SWG establishes separate TLS sessions with the destination server and the client, decrypts the content, applies all active security controls, then re-encrypts and forwards clean traffic.
What is the difference between a Secure Web Gateway and a firewall?

A firewall operates at the network layer (Layers 3–4), making decisions based on IP address, port, and protocol — it cannot inspect the content of encrypted HTTPS sessions. An SWG operates at the application layer, decrypting and inspecting what is inside web sessions, allowing it to block threats, enforce URL policy, apply DLP, and control application usage. Both are typically deployed together as complementary controls.

What is the difference between a Secure Web Gateway and a proxy?

A legacy web proxy was built for caching and bandwidth optimisation — it provides basic URL filtering but cannot decrypt TLS/SSL traffic. An SWG uses the same forward proxy architecture but adds malware detection, full TLS inspection, sandboxing, application control, and DLP. Same underlying mechanics, fundamentally different security capability.

What is the difference between SWG and CASB?
SWG secures all outbound web traffic — filtering URLs, blocking malware, and inspecting encrypted sessions. CASB focuses on cloud application usage — discovering shadow IT, enforcing SaaS data policies, and providing API-level visibility inside platforms like Microsoft 365. SWG provides web-traffic breadth; CASB provides cloud-application depth. In an SSE architecture, both are deployed together.
Will SWG affect user performance or experience? Cloud-delivered SWG inspects traffic through distributed Points of Presence close to the user — minimising latency compared to routing through a central datacentre. TLS inspection adds some processing overhead, managed through bypass policies for trusted destinations to balance security coverage with user experience.
