Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) is a comprehensive framework that brings together security and networking functions and delivers them in one, easy to manage platform. The term ‘SASE’ was coined by Gartner back in 2019 and was born out of a desire to simplify the vast range of cloud services, mobile devices, remote working services and the increase in cyberthreats.

Cisco Umbrella is a cloud-based, DNS security platform designed to provide advanced threat protection and internet security for businesses. It serves as a first line of defence against cyber threats by blocking malicious activities at the DNS layer, before they reach an organisation’s network or endpoints. Cisco Umbrella is part of the broader Cisco security ecosystem and plays a crucial role in enhancing cybersecurity posture.

In today’s interconnected digital world, cybersecurity remains an ever-present concern for organisations seeking to safeguard their sensitive data and systems from relentless cyberthreats. Cisco Duo Security enhances enterprise security by verifying user identities, establishing device trust and securing connections to company networks and applications through Multi-factor authentication (MFA). MFA provides much greater security for businesses. If one security factor is breached, such as a password, there are extra layers in place to protect the network and establish user identity.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often make the assumption that they are less likely to be targeted by cybercriminals due to their size, leading them to overlook the importance of network security. However, the reality is quite the opposite. Recent data from the Verizon Data Breach Investigation report revealed that in 2021, a staggering 61% of SMEs experienced a cyberattack. Criminals tend to target SMEs precisely because they typically have fewer resources and devote less time to securing their networks, making them more vulnerable to exploitation.

The repercussions of a cyberattack on an SME can be devastating, often more so than for larger organisations, primarily due to the lack of resources available to deal with the aftermath. 75% of small businesses agree they don’t have the personnel to address IT security. A successful attack resulting in data loss or service disruption can lead to significant financial losses and severe damage to the company’s reputation. Moreover, if sensitive data is compromised, businesses are at risk of regulatory fines and legal action.
As SMEs increasingly rely on technology to run their operations, a single cyberattack can bring their entire business to a halt. Cloud-based services, mobile devices, and the Internet of Things (IoT) have become integral to managing systems and connecting with customers. However, these advancements also expose SMEs to a wider range of security threats, such as malware, phishing, and ransomware.
The 2021 Verizon Data Breach Investigation report highlights that ransomware is the most common form of attack on SMEs. To safeguard against ransomware and other cyber threats, SMEs must implement robust security measures. Additionally, it is crucial to train employees on the risks of cybersecurity attacks, phishing emails and educate them on how to protect their systems effectively.

As hackers become more adept at ensnaring people in their scams, the rise of password fraud continues to increase. A single barrier to entry, i.e. a password is no longer enough in the modern business world, and a more sophisticated system is required.
Multi Factor Authentication is defined as a method of authentication that requires more than one factor to gain access to a system or account. The three authentication factors as defined by the Computer Resource Security Centre are ‘something you know, something you have, and something you are.’
Something you know is usually a pin or a secret answer. Something you have is often a smart phone or a secure key and something you are, is something that intrinsically defines the user, such as a fingerprint, facial recognition or retina scan.
These are the top 5 benefits of deploying MFA in your business:
Passwords can be compromised very easily, either through data hacks or just weak password creation. Adding an additional layer of authentication dramatically reduces the chance of a data attack. MFA can reliably block 99.9% of automated attacks according to Microsoft and therefore is an essential component in your fraud prevention kit.
Passwords are easily guessed, forgotten or shared between users, all of which make your data less secure. The constant need to reset passwords provides a frustrating user experience and can lead to workarounds. With MFA, a user can be authenticated with a smart device without the need for a password, eliminating the weak link in the security chain.
MFA technology is easy to deploy and scales up almost instantly. It acts as a gateway for your existing IT infrastructure so rolling it out and adding new users and devices is fast and efficient. It’s the perfect solution for businesses of any size.
Not only can you remove passwords from your security options, but MFA also simplifies the user log on experience using Single Sign On (SSO) solutions. An industry compliant MFA comes with SSO as standard removing the need for users to create complex passwords for each application. Instead, one sign on, using MFA, allows access to every application that the user requires saving time and increasing security.
Deploying MFA technology ensures your business is compliant with data protection laws and regulations. This is important for all businesses particularly for those processing card and financial data on behalf of their customers. Even if your business doesn’t deal directly with payments or commercial data, it’s still best practice to keep your client’s information as secure as possible. Any leaks risk your reputation and could lead to financial loss.
Implementing MFA is a relatively low cost, hassle-free deployment that provides high level security for your data and ensures you are compliant with data protection regulations. Our recommended product is Cisco Duo Security which can be deployed at lightning speed to protect your company. Speak to one of our experts and start securing your data today.

According to IBM’s Cost of Data Breach Report, the global average cost of a data breach was $4.24m in 2021. This is an increase of just under 10% from 2020. Financial services were the second most affected industry after healthcare with an average cost per breach of $5.72m. With such high stakes at risk, the financial services industry needs to shore up their security defences now more than ever.

The smart way to protect your business from cyber-attacks is by implementing a Secure Access Service Edge or SASE solution. SASE (pronounced sassy) is a transformational technology and combines access and security protocols to amalgamate multiple functions that were up until recently, stand-alone products. Software Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN), firewall as a service, secure web gateways, zero trust network access and Cloud access security broker are all now grouped into one integrated and easy to manage service.
Ransomware
One of the most prolific forms of data security breaches affecting the financial services industry comes in the form of ransomware. This where mainstream business operations are infiltrated, attacked and disrupted until, as the name suggests, a ransom is paid. The key to preventing ransomware attacks lies in stopping the malware coming into the network in the first place. SASE excels in this area by encrypting all traffic and blocking malicious software, traffic and lateral attacks which makes it impossible for attackers to insert malicious code into a network. SASE can also block clients from connecting to known ransomware sites and bot command and control servers.
Hybrid working
The rise of hybrid working accelerated by the pandemic shows no signs of slowing down. Globally, a recent PWC study found that in financial services 69% of institutions expect their workers to remain on remote work at least one day a week. The challenge for businesses is how to secure these multiple access points as well as those in their central offices. SASE works at the cloud edge to deliver protection and performance and is designed to help manage hybrid infrastructure and application environments in the modern enterprise. A SASE solution brings everything together into one easy to manage interface allowing you complete control over your network and applications access, including those logging on from different locations and devices.
Reduced costs
In the IBM Cost of Data Breach Report a key finding was that enterprises who were further along in their journey of switching to a hybrid cloud network suffered less financial loss from data loss than those who were just beginning to migrate their applications. Old legacy systems are no longer able to cope with the modern attacks hackers are employing and a complete holistic solution is the best defence against malicious attacks.
When dealing with client finances, the integrity and security of your network must be absolutely second to none. Orixcom have a wealth of experience of partnering with organisations for their connectivity, security and digital transformation to the cloud. Our experts will work with your team to put in place a tailor-made SASE solution for your business to ensure you’re secure, protected and constantly connected, wherever you are in the world. Do you know how much a system outage or IT downtime could cost your business? According to Gartner, the average cost of an IT outage is $5,600 a minute. There are many factors involved in calculating the costs for each business but in a recent ITIC survey, 98% of organisations said a single hour of downtime costs over $100,000. You can probably make a rough guess for your own business and it’s likely to be serious money.
